VOC emissions test methods and limits in Europe for moulded PU Foam in vehicles

On 26 September 2016, at the Polyurethanes Technical Conference in Baltimore, Michel Baumgartner Secretary General of EURO-MOULDERS, presented a brief historical overview of emissions test methods and VOC limits for moulded PU Foam in vehicles in Europe.

The presentation shows that in Europe there is still much room for improvement when it comes to alignment of test methods and specifications for polyurethane foam.

For that reason, Euro-Moulders calls on OEMS to make use of the current discussions on global standards for vehicle indoor air quality testing to also consider harmonizing tests methods for individual parts and materials used in cars. Similar to discussions on vehicle indoor air quality, such an alignment of test methods would not prevent each region of the world of different OEMs to set their own targets and limits. But it would help avoiding unneeded testing.
